The five-step setup
- Install from Google Play and grant Accessibility Service permission.
- Pick the apps you want to keep yourself out of: TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat, X/Twitter, Reddit, mobile games — anything.
- Choose Lumi's personality — Friend, Warden, Mom, Buddhist, Sarcastic, or Serious. Different voices move different people.
- Set difficulty — Easy, Medium, or Hardcore. Hardcore mode locks you out for hours if Lumi catches you lying.
- Try to open a blocked app. Lumi appears. Talk to her. Hear yourself say it out loud. The urge usually ends right there.
Why an AI conversation works where willpower fails
Static screen-time apps fail for one reason: they are predictable. After a week or two, the brain treats the wall as a familiar speed bump. You learn the disable-Settings path; it takes seven seconds and you do it half-asleep. The blocker becomes the new gateway, not the gate.
Linden breaks the pattern by swapping the fixed wall for a moving one. Every unlock attempt is a different conversation. Sometimes Lumi asks what you're going to do for the next 20 minutes. Sometimes she asks what feeling you're trying to dodge. Sometimes — on Hardcore — she just pulls up your last 24 hours of opens and asks how this time is going to be any different. The friction stays fresh because the friction itself keeps moving.
The six Lumi personalities
- Friend — warm, supportive, calls you out the way your actual closest friend would.
- Warden — cold and procedural. Immune to your excuses.
- Mom — patient, disappointed, somehow always right.
- Buddhist — calm. Asks if you remember why you opened the app.
- Sarcastic — reads your own excuses back to you with a beat of pause that does most of the work.
- Serious — philosophical. Pulls up the long-term cost.
Pick the one that actually moves you. If "Friend" makes you negotiate harder, pick Friend. If "Warden" makes you give up the unlock attempt sooner, pick Warden. There is no correct answer — there is only what works on you.
Hardcore mode
On Hardcore, Lumi rarely lets you through. If you lie and the conversation catches it, you're locked out of the blocked apps for several hours. Hardcore is for when you mean it — the week before a deadline, a deep-work stretch, or the period right after you decide doomscrolling isn't something you do anymore.
Friend codes
Add a friend (any nickname, 3–20 characters). They get a 6-digit code that rotates every day. To change Linden's difficulty back to Easy, you have to enter that code. Your friend can see your stats, can set your difficulty, and — if you mean it — can refuse to give you the code on a bad day. No more sneaking around your own commitments.
Talk to Lumi when you want TikTok. Most reasons don't survive. $7.99/month. Cancel any time.
Privacy — what Linden sees and doesn't
- No account required. No email or phone number.
- Lumi conversations live on your device unless you explicitly export them.
- We use Android device ID only — survives reinstall, but is anonymous.
- Accessibility Service permission is required for blocking, but Linden never reads screen content for any other purpose. The relevant code is open-source and auditable.
- No ads. Ever.
FAQ
- What is an AI gatekeeper?
- An AI gatekeeper is software that stands between you and a distracting app. Instead of a static block screen, you have to convince an AI character that your reason for opening the app is good enough. The conversation typically takes 30–90 seconds — long enough for the urge to pass.
- How long does a Lumi conversation take?
- 30 to 90 seconds for most users. On Hardcore difficulty, longer — Lumi will keep asking follow-up questions until your reasons collapse or you give up.
- Can I just disable Linden when I want to scroll?
- On Android, disabling apps that use the Accessibility Service requires several taps inside Settings → Accessibility → Linden, plus a confirmation. Hardcore mode optionally adds Device Admin which makes uninstalling impossible without disabling Device Admin first. Friend codes lock the difficulty change behind a daily-rotating 6-digit code that only your accountability friend has.
- What apps can Linden block?
- Anything on your device — TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat, X/Twitter, Reddit, Threads, BeReal, Pinterest, Facebook, mobile games, dating apps. You build the blocklist.
